SANDIE CROFT / Vocalist & Saraband Duo
1970´s
As a teenager Sandie sang & played guitar in local clubs, pubs & nightclubs in the Essex area.
Moved to London . Attended Drama school . Joined folk band Aurora as vocalist playing in the London bars & colleges.
!978/79 ; Sandie joined the band Meridian as lead vocalist at the 1000 seat nightclub Kings Country Club, singing popular songs of the day plus dinner dance music.I also had the pleasure of singing on a Royal Variety performance for Prince Charles in 1978 at the Club with the 3 Degrees topping the bill.
December 1979 formed a Musical Cabaret Duo with husband Ray as “Slap n Tickle” later the “ Turnpenny´s .”
1980´s
As a duo we played the Northern clubs as well as appearing on Theatre shows & night clubs all over Britain with our multi instrumental cabaret show. Toured with the “Comedians show” as musical support act.
Co wrote & performed jingles with Ray for James Whale´s show on Radio Aire in Leeds.
Opening act on the “Scarborough Fair” at the Spa Theatre, Scarborough in 1985, and played at the famous Nottingham Goose Fair.
Sandie attended High Melton Music school , Doncaster to study soprano ´86/88,and sang for 2 seasons with York Opera.
Summer 87 & 88 the duo played at the Lanzarotte Beach Club in the Canary Islands & The White Lady night club at Mojacar in Spain.
Oct 1988 – now .We moved to Portugal. Renamed the Duo Saraband & have been playing dance & easy listening music for Hotels, Private functions etc…..
1990´s Co wrote & Performed jingles (with Ray) for Lagos based Radio Atlantico Sul.
1995 We formed Duo Saratoga performing a Country & Western show in the Algarve & later in the U.K.
Sandie taught Country Line dancing at this time & in England as a competitor in the British Line Dance Championships took second place to the then world champion at Southampton,England.
2007/8; Sandie was engaged as a session singer for the Retiro Recording studios in Moncarpacho,Algarve to record original material written by local lyricist´s & also recorded the promo C.D for the Original musical “Winston”,which had it´s world premier at the Lagoa Auditorium October 2010.
Sandie was lead vocalist with the Jazz band “Easy Street” every Sunday lunchtime at the Fortaleza,Praia Da Luz 2007-2010.
Saraband Duo now also go out as rock n roll duo Yakety Yak .
2009- Singer & Co founder of The Teds rock n roll band.Playing 1950´s rock n roll as well as rockabilly tunes.
RAY CHARSLEY (lead guitar/Vocals)
Born in South London, UK ,Ray began playing music around 9 years of age when he joined the Salvation Army band where he was taught the basics of music and how to play the cornet
In 1962 aged 15 Ray joined The Erstwhile Few, a London based pop band as lead guitar/vocalist.
In 1966 whilst playing with a London based band the Torque Ray was head hunted by the lead guitarist of another local R & B band called The Game to sing lead vocals.
The band already had television and recording experience and a powerful management team looking after them “Jean Lincoln & Bob Miller Agency” & Kenny Lynch was the bands recording manager.
The band had a recording session at R.G.Jones in Wimbledon & Ray co- wrote a b side "Gotta Wait"
The band played live on "Ready Steady Go". Julie Felix and Alan Price were on the same bill. Their song was voted a hit on Jukebox Jury & reached no.36 in the UK pop charts.
The band toured the UK for a couple of years before splitting up & the members going their own ways.
Ray went on to play with a trio “Morning Haze” & later in the 1970´s was a founder member of Kent based “Sweet Illusion” a popular musical comedy show band in Southern England. They recorded 3 albums together & appeared on TV´s Pebble Mill & at the Royal Albert Hall.
In 1979 Ray met future wife vocalist Sandie Croft and from 1980 0nwards they have played together as a musical multi instrumental duo both in Britain & abroad.
In the mid 1980´s Ray played with several brass bands up in Yorkshire including the Championship section Jaguar cars City of Coventry.
In 1988 Ray & Sandie moved to Portugal & Ray as well as playing with the duo, plays Trumpet & Trombone with the OJL Jazz Orchestra & was vocalist & Trombonist/Trumpet player with the Easy Street Jazz band.
In 2009 he was the founder member of the Teds rock n roll band .
